What exactly is a golf handicap?
A golf handicap is a number that represents a player’s potential ability. It’s designed to level the playing field by allowing golfers of all skill levels to compete fairly. The lower your handicap, the better your playing ability.
In simple terms:
- A scratch golfer (handicap of 0) is expected to shoot a level par round.
- A handicap of 18 means you’re likely to shoot 18 strokes over par on a standard 18-hole course.
It’s a useful way to measure improvement over time and enjoy competitive play on an equal footing.
How is a handicap calculated?
Handicaps are calculated using the World Handicap System (WHS), which takes into account:
- Your most recent scores
- The course rating and slope (difficulty level of each course)
- Adjustments for exceptional performance
Typically, your handicap is based on the best 8 of your last 20 rounds. The formula accounts for course difficulty, so two players can compete fairly even if they’re playing on different courses or have different skill levels.
Do you need a handicap to play golf?
Short answer: No, not necessarily.
If you’re a beginner or just playing casually with friends, you don’t need an official handicap to enjoy the game – and that’s especially true for events like those hosted by The Birdie Club, which are designed to be social and inclusive.
However, having a handicap is helpful if:
- You want to track your improvement over time
- You’re starting to play in club competitions or local tournaments
- You enjoy a little friendly competition with evenly matched groups
- You travel and want to play competitively at other courses internationally
Can beginners get a handicap?
Yes – and they should. There’s no minimum skill level required to establish a handicap. All you need are a few completed rounds, and your index will reflect your current playing ability.
In fact, tracking your handicap as a beginner can:
- Help you set realistic goals
- Motivate you to improve
- Provide structure as you learn course management and scoring
You don’t have to wait until you’re “good enough” to get your handicap, as it evolves as your game does.
How do you get a handicap in the UAE?
If you’re based in the UAE, you can get your official golf handicap through the Emirates Golf Federation (EGF) – the governing body for amateur golf in the country.
Here’s how to get started:
- Gather enough score cards to be able to register for an official handicap. You’ll need to record and submit several 18-hole rounds (usually three or more) to establish your handicap. The system uses your best scores to calculate your index.
- Become a member at a golf club– All golf clubs in the UAE are connected to the EGF. When you become a member at a club, their membership team will assist you in setting up your handicap directly with the EGF.
- Speak to us at The Birdie Club and we can put you in touch with the EGF team to register as a sole player.

Final Thoughts
So, do you really need a handicap? If you’re just getting started or playing for fun, the answer is no – but it’s a valuable tool if you want to improve, compete, or measure your progress. An official handicap allows you to play on equal terms with others, join events with confidence, and get the most out of your golfing journey.
At The Birdie Club we don’t require any of our players to have handicaps for our scramble events. This encourages a more inclusive environment and a space where they are able to focus on enjoying themselves out on the course.
Everyone can join our events – you don’t need to be part of our lessons to be part of The Birdie Club!
